If You Find a Sick Animal

Easy steps to follow...

An injured jackdaw

1. Secure the Animal

What you use depends on the animal, but first job is to catch the injured or sick animal. Most animals and birds are fine in a high sided box, but be aware that they may climb or fly if they start to feel slightly better so a lid/minder with towel over the box is always a good idea. Put an old towel in the bottom so they don't slide around on the journey.

2. Contact us

We are based in Horton in Ribblesdale near Settle. This may be quite a distance from you, we can advise nearer places if need be. Phone 07300 423080. We try to always be available on the phone but obviously that's not always possible.

Your second option is to contact us via Facebook Messenger, there are a few of us with access to that.

Please don't email about an emergency, it may be a few days before we see it!

3. Add Heat and Water

Very young rabbit

The vast majority of animals and birds ill or injured will benefit from additional heat, even in the height of the summer. Your help is also affecting them, they are shocked. Any nocturnal animal out in the day is desperately seeking heat as their body shuts down.

Use a hot water bottle wrapped in an old towel, give room for the patient to get off the heat if need be. A plastic bottle wrapped in an old towel works just as well.

Add a little water, but if it might spill remove for the car journey.

4. Thank you

All rescues start with you, thank you for caring and being their ambulance.

Don't worry about feeding them, they don't need food just yet, just the help you're giving them. If there is any delay in getting them to us we will have spoken to you about it. Especially in Summer delays are a killer, fly strike and maggots mean you need to act fast.
